Mental health awareness for everyone who works in a UAE public or private school: teachers, teaching assistants, office staff, bus staff, coaches and support staff. You will learn what wellbeing and mental health mean, how to notice when a student is struggling, how to have a first supportive conversation, and what to do straight away when a worry is serious, including when a student talks about self-harm or ending their life. The course sets out what the Ministry of Education, ADEK (Abu Dhabi), KHDA (Dubai) and SPEA (Sharjah) expect, and how to use your own school's route. It does not train you to counsel students or to diagnose.

Wellbeing is how a student is doing in their life as a whole. It covers how they feel, how they get on with other people, how healthy they are, and how they cope with school. Mental health is one part of wellbeing. It is about our thoughts and feelings, and how we cope with everyday life.
Everyone has mental health, in the same way that everyone has physical health. It can be good at one time and poor at another. A student can have a hard week or a hard term. Some students have a longer difficulty that needs help from trained professionals.
Sharjah's school regulator, the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA), names six areas of student wellbeing in its Wellbeing Improvement Framework. They are a useful picture for any school:
These areas affect each other. A student who isn't sleeping may struggle to learn. A student who is being left out by friends may stop eating lunch. A student who is worried about exams may stop playing sport. This is why every adult in school, not only teachers, can notice when something has changed.
Most students who seem low, worried or angry are going through something ordinary: an argument with a friend, a bad mark, or a change at home. With kindness and a trusted adult, many feel better in time. Some students have a mental health difficulty, such as anxiety or low mood that lasts and gets in the way of daily life, an eating problem, or self-harm. They need help from trained people.
You are not expected to diagnose. Your job is to notice, listen, and pass your worry on through your school's route. Trained people decide what it means and what help is needed.
Students are more likely to talk when they know an adult in school who cares. In Dubai's last Student Wellbeing Census, in 2021, 87% of students said they were connected with at least one adult at school. Sleep and worry stood out as concerns. You could be that adult for a student.
Based on: SPEA's Wellbeing Improvement Framework (the six areas; the short explanations of each are ours), KHDA's Dubai Student Wellbeing Census 2021 results, and general good practice (what wellbeing and mental health mean, how the areas affect each other and why every adult can notice change, the difference between struggling and being unwell, the 'not expected to diagnose' warning, 'you could be that adult', and the flipcards).
