A practical course for everyone who works with students in a UAE public or private school: teachers, teaching assistants, Individual Assistants, coaches and bus staff. It is about the day-to-day support you give a student who finds it hard to manage their feelings, get on with others or cope with school. You will learn how these needs can show, what UAE rules expect for these students, and why behaviour is often a message. You will practise building steady relationships and routines, preparing a student for change, supporting an anxious or withdrawn student, and following the adjustments in their plan, including in tests and calm spaces. You will learn how to help a student regulate, calm rising distress, keep everyone safe without force as punishment, and support recovery and repair after an incident. You will see how to work with your inclusion lead, counsellor, social worker and the family, and what to do straight away when a need becomes a sign of harm or an emergency. Use it after Student Wellbeing and Mental Health Awareness and Inclusion Beyond the Register: those help you notice and find students who are struggling; this one is what you do in class every day. The course is practical: you don't diagnose, you don't give counselling, and it doesn't replace your school's own procedures. It is built on Federal Law No. 29 of 2006 (people of determination), Cabinet Resolution No. 3 of 2018 on the national classification of disabilities, the Ministry of Education's inclusive education and behaviour rules, KHDA's and ADEK's inclusion, behaviour and student mental health policies, and Federal Law No. 3 of 2016 on Child Rights (Wadeema's Law).
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
12 questions are selected for each attempt, one group per learning outcome. You need 80% to pass. If you do not pass, the feedback points you back to the section each question came from. You have 3 attempts to pass. A pass is never counted, so you can always take the course again once you have passed. 5 attempts that do not pass within 12 months close the assessment for 12 months.
An employer sees whether you passed and your certificate. They never see your answers, your scores or how many attempts you took.
14 sections you can read or listen to, and a certificate when you pass.

This course is about what you do every day, in class or on the bus, for a student who finds it hard to manage their feelings, get on with others or cope with school.
In this course, 'social, emotional and mental health needs' is a plain description, not a label. It is not a category in UAE law. The UAE's national classification uses 'psycho-emotional disorders'. Some school frameworks use a similar heading. The phrase describes students who, for a short or a long time, struggle with:
A quiet student can need help as much as a loud one, and is easier to miss. Look for patterns, not one bad day.
Federal Law No. 29 of 2006 describes a person with special needs, now called a person of determination, as someone with a total or partial difficulty, permanent or temporary, in abilities that include psychological abilities. The psycho-emotional category needs a report from a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist. ADHD and autism are separate categories.
You don't diagnose. Only a licensed professional can diagnose a mental health condition. Don't tell a student or a family that you think the student has a condition. Your part is to notice, support, follow the plan and pass on what you see.
Based on: Federal Law No. 29 of 2006 on the rights of people with special needs (Article 1); Cabinet Resolution No. 3 of 2018 on the national classification of disabilities (category 10, psycho-emotional disorders, and the separate ADHD and autism categories); the UAE School Inspection Framework 2015-16 (a 'behavioural, social, emotional' heading); KHDA's parents' guide to inclusive education (2021, page 15: only a licensed specialist can diagnose); and general good practice (the list, the table and the check).
